Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has issued a "stern warning" to Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing for serving alcohol at an official government event. Anwar said the mistake must not be repeated and despite Tiong's explanation, it was still entirely inappropriate, Bernama reported. Gala dinner On Oct. 2, the ministry hosted a gala dinner for the Global Travel Meet event. However, photos quickly emerged from the dinner showing that alcoholic beverages like wine and beer were served at the event. Various participants were also photographed smiling and holding the beverages in question. Backlash erupted on Malaysian social media, with netizens slamming the fact that alcohol was served at an official event linked to the government. Speaking to Malaysiakini, Tiong said on Oct. 4 that the event was not a government-hosted one. Rather, it was a privately-funded dinner hosted by members of the industry. The government had merely "borrowed" the industry's platform for the event, he said, responding to criticism from a Malaysian Member of Parliament (MP). Tiong added that Tourism Malaysia's role at the event was merely limited to launching the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign and coordinating cultural performances. He urged the MP not to make "baseless" statements that could undermine international confidence in Malaysia. Not enough However, Tiong's explanation was not well-received by other Malaysian politicians. He was criticised by members of his own ruling coalition Pakatan Harapan for the denial that "put the blame on others." Tiong was also criticised by opposition party Bersatu, which said: "If no action is taken against this incident, then it will set the narrative that those from the upper echelons of society can be excluded from adhering to the law. For serious offences such as serving alcohol, the government should prove that the principles of accountability still exist within their establishment." No exceptions Anwar said he was not satisfied with Tiong's explanation to him that the alcohol was served only after the official programme had ended. He said there were no exceptions to the rule of serving alcohol at official events. He added there was "no room for negligence" on this issue. Top image from Ahmad Anwar Asyraf Facebook page.
