Elderly commuter falls out of wheelchair when bus makes turn, hits his head and splits eyelid: Son

A 76-year-old bus commuter fell out of his wheelchair when the bus made a turn and was injured after hitting his head, said the man's son.

Stomper Farid shared the email he wrote to SBS Transit about what happened to his father on Aug 22.

He said his dad and their domestic helper had boarded SBS bus service 28 at Tampines Street 32 at 1.35pm.

"My father, who was wheelchair-bound, parked himself within the appropriate handicapped allocated spot on the bus," recounted Farid.

The bus was turning from Bedok North Avenue 3 into Upper Changi Road when the elderly passenger fell out of his wheelchair, according to the son.

"His head smacked hard onto the floor," said the Stomper.

"This caused a deep cut just above the eye, splitting his eyelid open. It also caused his head to bleed profusely.

"The incident greatly distressed our helper, shaken and trying her best to stay calm with other passengers doing their best to give assistance."

Farid's father was taken by ambulance to Changi General Hospital.

"At the hospital, my father was given nine stitches in total on his forehead and eyelid," said the Stomper.

"A CT scan showed no visible or underlying injuries that concerned the doctors. However, we were advised to dive further into the manner that the driver drove the bus."

Farid had several questions for SBS Transit:

• Was the driver speeding upon reaching the junction?
• Was the driver aware there was a wheelchair-bound person on the bus at the time?
• Did the bus driver report the incident to the higher-ups and the authorities?

The Stomper said: "My father is 76. His bones are fragile and he is not very agile. We are fortunate that this incident did not cause further and more distressing injuries or damage.

Addressing SBS Transit, he added: "We do not seek compensation for the unfortunate event. Nonetheless, someone is required to clarify our queries and doubts about the safety and well-being of the passengers.

"This will not stop us from taking the bus. However, kindly put some perspective into the overall environment of commuters."

In response to a Stomp query, SBS Transit spokeswoman Grace Wu said: "We are sorry to learn of the injury and distress caused to Mr Farid's father in this incident and are in touch with the family.

"We take this incident seriously and are looking into the matter."
